Based on a master plan drawn up by PETRONAS, the ECER will see some RM112 billion spent on 227 projects by the year 2020.

These projects, to be implemented on a regional basis, are expected to overcome income inequalities between rural and urban areas, alleviate poverty; balance the growth between Peninsula Malaysia's west and east coasts; build basic infrastructure and optimise the property sector including Malay reserve land.

Tapping into the inherent resources and strengths of each state, the master plan has identified tourism; oil, gas and petrochemical; manufacturing; agriculture and education sectors for economic development.
