PETRONAS’ ACTIVITIES ADD TO MERDEKA 2011 CELEBRATIONS

In commemoration of Malaysia’s 54th Independence Day, PETRONAS is undertaking various initiatives to enhance and propagate the Merdeka spirit among its staff and members of the public. The initiatives – ranging from flying the Jalur Gemilang at its premises nationwide to organising a special contest on Facebook – are hoped to make this year’s Merdeka celebrations more meaningful to all Malaysians.

To add to this pool of activities, a Merdeka Car Sticker Campaign was launched today by Encik Mohammad Medan Abdullah, PETRONAS’ Senior General Manager of Group Corporate Affairs Division, at the PETRONAS service station at Jalan Kolam Ayer Lama in Ampang, Selangor. Accompanied by Encik Izuddin Husaini M Yusoff, Senior General Manager of Retail Business, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad, Encik Mohammad Medan distributed the car stickers to motorists who visited the station today.

Approximately 300,000 pieces of the car stickers will be distributed at selected PETRONAS service stations from 25 August to 16 September 2011. The message on the car stickers, “One Destination. One Destiny. 1Malaysia.”, or “Satu Destinasi. Satu Matlamat. 1Malaysia.”, reflects the theme of this year’s Independence Day celebrations, “1Malaysia: Transformasi Berjaya, Rakyat Sejahtera”.

Apart from this initiative, PETRONAS’ other efforts to celebrate Merdeka 2011 include:
  • Decorating its headquarters, the PETRONAS Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, and other regional offices with the Jalur Gemilang.
  • Publishing special print and television advertisements titled “Hands”, which highlights that despite their differences, Malaysians have inherent similarities and values that continues to bind them as one people.
  • Staging of a mini musical theatre entitled “Kemerdekaan Satu Kenyataan” by PETRONAS Performing Arts Group on 16 and 17 September 2011 at the Dewan FIlharmonik PETRONAS.
  • Organising “Saya Suka Malaysia” Facebook contest from 23 August to 12 September 2011, in which Malaysians are asked “what do they love about Malaysia” and the videos of their answers will be voted to win cash prizes. The public can also submit their videos at sayasukamalaysia.submission@gmail.com by 25 August 2011 to participate. The top five videos with the highest votes will each receive RM5,000.
  • Participating in the 54th Merdeka and Hari Malaysia national level parade which will be held on 16 September 2011. A total of 54 PETRONAS’ employees will take part in the parade.

Living the spirit of Merdeka, every August PETRONAS, alongside with ExxonMobil and Shell, the other two founding members of the Merdeka Award, would announce the recipients of the Award in recognition of excellent achievements and outstanding contributions by individuals and organisations in various categories. The names of this year’s recipients were announced on 22 August.
