PETRONAS SUPPLIES FLUID TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS™ TO MERCEDES GP PETRONAS TEAM

Kuala Lumpur, 5 April 2011 – PETRONAS’ partnership with the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team will take another significant step forward this week. Starting from the PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix this weekend, PETRONAS will be supplying itsFluid Technology Solutions™ package to the race team.

PETRONAS’ Fluid Technology Solutions™, which includes fuel, engine oils, hydraulic and gear oils as well as transmission fluids, will be supplied to the team through subsidiary PETRONAS Lubricants International. Prior to this, PETRONAS has been supplying lubricants to the race team since the Spanish Grand Prix in May 2010.

The new supply arrangement was announced during the visit by the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team – including drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg -- to the PETRONAS Melaka Refinery Complex, the core of PETRONAS’ value-adding downstream activity.

Mohd Medan Abdullah, Senior General Manager, Corporate Services Division, PETRONAS notes: “This is indeed a significant step forward in our relationship with the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One team and DAIMLER MERCEDES. In the short time since the partnership was formalised in December 2009, PETRONAS had already secured the supply of lubricants to the team. Now with ourFluid Technology Solutions™ package we will be supplying everything from fuels to hydraulic and transmission fluids. In addition to this, we have also been able to expand our business to include supplies to key MERCEDES markets around the world.”

The visit to the PETRONAS Melaka Refinery Complex was organised as part of the team’s programme to introduce PETRONAS’ core downstream chain of activities from the refining process to its lubricants blending. Located in Melaka, the complex is home to two crude oil refining trains, a lubricant blending facility as well as PETRONAS’ base oil plant.

Experiential learning with Schumacher and Rosberg during outreach programme
Following the visit, the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS drivers joined 135 primary school students in a PETRONAS’ educational outreach programme. The students were from three schools in Sungai Udang, Tangga Batu and Pantai Kundor adopted by PETRONAS for its on-going Program Bakti Pendidikan PETRONAS.

The two drivers played teacher for the day, each tasked to “teach” their respective group of children: Schumacher provided English lessons while Rosberg engaged his students in a science quiz.

The one-day visit and outreach programme was designed to highlight the business links of PETRONAS’ partnership in Formula One and to bridge the fast-paced world of motorsports and education, giving the opportunity to the students to get closer to the team and drivers with an underlying aim of nurturing and inspiring their interest in science and technology and education in general.
