The Penang Fingerstyle Competition 2015 was held on 19 December 2015 at Rainbow Paradise Hotel. Jointly organised by YB Teh Yee Cheu, the state assemblyman for KADUN Tanjong Bunga, JKKK Jalan Gajah and Mr. Brian Gan from Penang Guitar Events, this is the second consecutive year the competition is held. To our best knowledge, this is the only fingerstyle guitar competition in Malaysia and we will try to make this a yearly event, bigger and better each time.

Fingerstyle guitar is a fairly new technique in Malaysia and there are relatively few fingerstyle guitar players around. Fingerstyle technique involves playing the melody, accompaniment and bass at the same time. Among the famous fingerstyle guitar players who have come to Malaysia to perform are Tommy Emmanuel and Sungha Jung. Good and versatile guitarists make up their own compositions and arrangements.

This competition was in two categories, below-23 years old and below-16 years old. This is to encourage younger players to take up playing fingerstyle guitar. Lai Ze Ren won the below-23 category and has held the title since last year.

Winners won guitars, accessories and goodie bags as prizes. The event was sponsored by LBS Music World and Rainbow Paradise Hotel.
