Dear friends & supporters,

We will be performing at the PEA Heritage Bistro, Solok Serani in Pulau Tikus every Friday and Saturday for the month of December 2012. Music starts at 9.30pm and ends at 12.30am.Spread the word around and invite your friends and relatives if they like to listen to good Country & Western and Oldies music and also have a good time. A fine selection of Christmas songs by the band will surely keep all of you in the Christmas mood and spirit.

There is no cover charge and entrance is free and open to public. Drinks are reasonably priced as with any other outlet providing good "Live Music". Also come early and try the Western/Local food as well as the Eurasian food at the bistro.

Kindly take note that we will be performing at the bistro every Saturday this month except on 22 December as we will be performing at the Gurney Paragon on that day..

There is adequate parking on the road (Solok Serani) leading to the club if you come early but you can also park at the Pulau Tikus Church grounds and come by the back entrance of the church to the club which is a shortcut and also lit up.

Venue: Padang Brown to City Hall, Esplanade

Time:   7.30 pm to 11.00 pm

 

The Chingay members will display their superb skills in balancing stilt poles on their fingers, foreheads, shoulders and teeth during this annual street parade. Same goes with Lion Dance troupe member. The parade begins from Padang Brown and passes through the main street of Georgetown before ending at Esplanade. Besides, there would also be lion and dragon dance performance and giant colourful flags and floats during this event.

Don’t miss out this great opportunity to capture troupe members showing off their creativity and flexibility.

The parade is expected to start from Padang Brown at 7.30pm, and the 1st team to reach Esplanade by 9pm.

Key performance area for spectators will be at Padang Brown, Penang Road in front of KOMTAR, and Esplanade (in front of City Hall).

Taking the baton from the Causeway Scrabble Challenge, the largest and most prestigious Scrabble tournament held in Malaysia for the past 10 years, the Pesta Pulau Pinang Scrabble Championship (PPPSC) 2012 will be Malaysia’s newest addition to the calendar of international Scrabble tournaments. Players are expected to participate in the battle for prize money totaling up to RM50,000 with a top prize of USD6,000 in the Masters Division. PPPSC, which will be an annual event, will be first held from 13-16 December 2012 at the Eastin Hotel Penang.

24 October 2012 - The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) is organizing the 7th Asia Pacific Ecotourism Conference (APECO 2012) from 28th to 30th November 2012. The Penang State Government will play hosts this year taking the reins from Sabah, Kedah, Sarawak, Pahang, Terengganu and Selangor who had organized over the years.  APECO 2012 will be held at the Eastin Hotel Penang. The Guest of Honor of APECO 2012 is YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang who will also deliver the Keynote Address “Back To Mother Nature”.

The Rotary Club of Penang will hold a Fundraising Jazz Dinner on Friday 30th November 2012 in support of our various Projects for 2012-2013 in assistance to our beloved community. Over the 82 years of service to the Community, The Rotary Club of Penang has done many meaningful, sustainable and successful projects. We hope with this fund raising we are able to continue to assist the meaningful projects and also continue to do more good service projects for our community.

To name a few, the following projects under our wing:- - The Job Link Center; enable to provide knowledge and tools to work for the physically handicap young adults.

- The Wheel Chair Club project - The Penang Water project - The Underprivileged children support - The Home nursing - The Awareness on Sexual abuse campaign - The Awareness on obesity for Children campaign - The Dialysis Centers and many more projects to assist the less privileged in our society.

Penang Beach Carnival 2012 is back again and will be held on Sunday, November 25, 2012 on the coast of Golden Sands Beach Resort.This year, there will be a total of 24 activities and performances suitable for all walks of life.

We will begin with Beach Run event at 7 am and Play Fishing Competition. Photography Contest participants can begin to register at 9 o'clock.

The highlight of the program is the Lantern Competition 2012, organized for the first time. It will be replacing Decorated boat competition. For safety precautions, there will be no competitions held in the sea.Only the Skimboarding competition will be held by the coast of the beach.

Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon 2012

Venue: Queensbay Mall

The Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) has been held every year since 1985.This marathon attracts people from all over the world to come together in Penang to run across the Penang Bridge which at 13.5km, is one of the longest bridges in South East Asia.

Th Penang Bridge International Marathon is the biggest running event in Malaysia and on this day is the only time the bridge is ever closed to public.

Penang Space Festival with NASA 2012

The aim of space carnival is to help students acquire transdisciplinary knowledge in science & technology, arts and culture that is innovative, creative and interactive. The talk will be the window to NASA's robust programs of exploration, technology developement and scientific research to seek new knowledge and understanding of Earth, the solar system and the Universe.

October's Highlight! – Choir @ Assumption Church – Saturday, 27 October 2012 @ 3.30pm – 4.30pm

The choir performance by The Messengers will be held in aid of the Assumption Church’s pipe organs restoration. The Assumption Church’s pipe organ is one of the remaining few oldest pipe organs in the country. All are welcome to come and support this noble cause.

 



Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival

Date:30th September 2012
Venue: Esplanade ,Penang
Time: 7pm onwards.

The Mid-Autmumn Festival commonly known in Malaysia as the Lantern and Moon Cake Festival,is a popular East Asian celebration of abundance and togetherness. Dating back 3,000 years,this moon gazing and lantern parading is celebrated in honour of Chang Er, the beautiful wife of tyrannical ruler and archer Hou Yi.

It's a time for family members and friends to gether around to gaze at and admire the full moon while savouring moon cakes, mini yams, water caltrops, ground nuts, pomeloes and Chinese tea.

 



55th Merdeka Parade & Celebration

Date:31st August 2012
Venue: Esplanade ,Penang
Time: 8.30pm.

The Penang State Government is organizing a Merdeka Day Parade on the 31st of August 2012, 8.30 am at Padang Esplande. The event is held to celebrate the independance of Malaya, 55 years ago.

The theme for this year's state celebration is "Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa". The theme hopes to convey the message of unity, prosperity and harmony in Penang and our beloved country, Malaysia.

Over 150 contigents representating various government agencies such as the State Secretary, JKR, MPPP, MPSP, District Office, PDRM, BOMBA, Angkatan Tentera Malaysia, ambulance, RELA, Scouts and many more will be marching in the parade. Also look out for invited school bands and their performances.

On top of that, the Penang State Government will also be hosting a Hari Raya Open House the next day on the 1st of September, from 3.00pm-6.00pm at Padang MPSP, Butterworth.

Both events will be graced by His Excellency, TYT Tun Dato’ Seri Utama (Dr.) Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas the Governor of Penang and the Right Honorable Y.A.B Tuan Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang.

 



Launching of Firefly’s Inaugural Flight To Koh Samui

This weekend, Firefly will be launching its inaugural flight to Koh Samui at the Penang International Airport. Form the 11th August onwards, Firefly will be flying directly to Koh Samui every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Currently, Firefly operates one daily direct flight between Subang and Koh Samui, a flight that enjoys an average seat factor of 75 percent with many repeat customers who return to Koh Samui year after year...

Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon Official Launching

Date: 7th August 2012
Venue: Eastin Hotel ,Penang
Time: 10.30 am.

The Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon (APBIM) 2012 is set to launch this 7 August at Eastin Hotel, Penang. The actual event will fall on 18 November 2012.

APBIM has been attracting people from all over the world. Last year, the total number of participants reached up to 27,500 runners compared to 24,000 in year 2010 and 19,000 in year 2009.

Winners of Photography Competition

A photography competition was held in conjuction with the Plenitude Penang International Dragon Boat Festival and the Penang Bon Odori Festival on the 30th of June and 21st of July respectively.

For the Plenitude Penang International Dragon Boat Festival we recieved 65 photographs and three winners have been chosen.

Penang Sakura Blossom
Date: March 2012 
Venue: Bayan Baru and Bukit Mertajam 

The Tabebuia Rosea, Pink Tecoma, Rosy Trumpet Tree or what Penangites fondly know as the Penang Sakura will be in full bloom again throughout the month of March.

Planted along the stretch of Bayan Baru as well as in Bukit Mertajam, each tree bears a majestic canopy of white, pink or pastel purple flowers every year, attracting all sorts of visitors to revel in its beauty. During this month, many will travel to this part of the island to capture beautiful photographs or maybe enjoy romantic moments with a loved one under its pretty pink shade.

Although many may call these the Cherry Blossoms of Penang, they are not to be confused with the actual Japanese Cherry Blossom or Sakura as the locals only call them that because of its colour and resemblance. Now, every Penangite will be able to experience the glory of such beautiful blossoms without having to travel all the way to Japan.

Altan Urag (loosely translated as 'Kin of the Khan,' referring to Genghis Khan's lineage) is a Mongolian folk rock band combining traditional and contemporary music. Their mission is to promote Mongolian culture to the world, as well as keeping their heritage exciting to the young people of Mongolia. Traveling all the way from the Central Asian plateau, the seven member group are one of the festival's must-see bands.

The group uses handmade instruments to weave their gorgeous, hypnotic sounds, including the morin khuur (horse head fiddle), ikh khuur (grand horse head fiddle), bishguur (traditional horn) and yoochin (a type of hammered dulcimer), as well as incorporating khoomii (throat singing) and long song into the vocals.

Fans of salsa music should make a date with Columbian artist, Maite Hontele, at the upcoming Penang World Music Festival 2012. Best to bring along your dancing shoes for her danzon, son, Latin and Colombian jazz beat will surely get you dancing to the energetic tempo.

Starting to play the trumpet at a tender age of 14, Maite grew up surrounded by Cuban music being a daughter of a musician. A graduate from the Conservatory of Rotterdam, Maite’s skill and versatility is in danzon, son, Latin and Colombian jazz. Her first musical venture was by joining the brass band in her neighborhood and later on she performed in various concerts and festival around Colombia where she now resides. Maite will be performing at the festival on the 30th of March (Friday) and 1st of April 2012 (Sunday).

Chap Goh Meh & Fireworks Celebration 2012
Date: 6th Feb 2012 
Time: 6pm to 11pm 
Venue: Esplanade, Penang 

This coming 6th of February, join us for a unique, multicultural Chap Goh Meh celebration at Padang Esplanade from 6pm to 11.pm.

Various performances will await visitors including Chingay and Lion Dance, Multi – Cultural Dance, Special Guest Star Lau Han Jie and a rare Lion Dance On Stilts performance. Penang’s special hawker food will be sold starting from 6.00pm onwards. The highlight of the evening is of course, the tradition of throwing of oranges into the sea.

The throwing of oranges into the sea is an important part of Penang ’s Chap Goh Meh cultural heritage. Traditionally, unmarried women would toss tangerines into the sea. While doing so, hopeful unmarried men would try their luck at catching these tangerines in order to meet their future spouse. Our Guest of Honour Chief Minister of Penang , Yang Amat Berhormat Tuan Lim Guan Eng, will have the honour of throwing the first orange into the sea.

Kek Lok Si Temple - Display of Lights

Noted as No. 4 best place to visit by VisitPenang website readers, during Chinese New Year, Temple of Supreme Bliss will be the focal point of festival for the Chinese community in Penang.

During the Chinese New Year celebration, thousands of devotees turned up for the annual lighting ceremony at Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam.

Starting from Chinese New Year, Kek Lok Si Temple will be light up every night at 7pm until midnight to symbolize peace, luck and prosperity.

Approximately 230,000 light bulbs and 10,000 lanterns light up the temple every night in conjunction with Chinese New Year. Making this emple one of Asia's most beautiful temple. The most oustanding scene is the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas, it is over 35 metres in height and is reputed to be one of the largest pagodas in Malaysia. The glittering pagoda can be seen from from several kilometres away.

Penang World Music Festival

For three consecutive days, Penang will flicker and pulsate to a different kind of rhythm. Nestled in the serene Quarry Garden situated just left of the entrance to the famous Botanic Gardens and amidst lush trees and tropical foliage, the 3rd Penang World Music Festival 2012 will be held. The festival will feature world renowned musicians from Malaysia as well as from overseas who will gather and participate in "a convergence of harmonic fusion".

From 30th March to 1st April 2012, the Penang World Music Festival organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and further supported by KDU, Virtual Malaysia and Hard Rock Hotel (The Official Hotel) promises to enthrall and entertain thousands with top world music performances. This time, the event is expected to attract a bigger crowd as world music enthusiasts, international, regional and local, throng to the Botanic Gardens in 2012.
