Protecting our children: Evaluating statutory rape laws
Sunday, 2nd June 2014
Venue: Wawasan Open University, Penang
Time: 2.00 pm - 5.00 pm
Admission: FREE
In recent times, we have witnessed what appears to be an increasing leniency on the part of the Malaysian justice system towards case involving sex with minors. In August last year, two offenders in two separate cases escaped jail sentences due to the courts citing, among other things, the offenders' "bright future", as reasons for withholding incarceration.
More recently in Sabah, the prosecution allowed a case to be withdrawn simply because the 40-year-old offender agreed to marry the 13-year-old victim.
The outcomes of these cases have exasperated civil society and Malaysians at large. This forum aims to provide a platform to evaluate the existing legal framework for the protection of minors especially against sexual offences as well as to examine the social setting surrounding this issue.
