"The Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector plays a critical role in shaping the economic landscape of the country. In the year 2011, SMEs account for up to 99.2% of total business establishments, made up 57.3% of total employment in Malaysia and contributed up to 32.5% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.
In our continuous efforts to enhance women’s participation in the socio-economic landscape of the country, PWDC and KIT& W (Koperasi Ibu Tunggal dan Wanita Seberang Perai Tengah) co-organized the ’Fiesta Keusahawanan Wanita Seberang Jaya’ or The Seberang Jaya Women’s Entrepreneurship Fiesta with the theme , “Women, The Economy’s Catalyst” or “Wanita Pemangkin Ekonomi” in Bahasa Malaysia on the 2nd of March 2013 at the MPSP Building in Bandar Perda, Seberang Perai.
This highly anticipated event was organized as a follow up of the successful event, “Suara Wanita Permatang Pauh: Dialog Isu Wanita Setempat & Cadangan Pelan Tindakan Wanita” on the 20th of January 2013 which was also jointly organized by PWDC and KIT&W. The dialouge had hilghlighted that the local women’s community had a high demand for the improvement of the socio-economic status of women in the area but was lacking in capacity (specifically business capital), marketing skills and networking opportunities.
Thus, as the next step in the effort to empower the women in Seberang Perai Tengah, the Fiesta was organized with the focus of providing important information on resources and services provided by various organizations (government, NGO and private sectors) that would be of assistance to current women entrepreneurs and also those who are interested in kicking off a career as an entrepreneur. The event also acted as a networking platform for the women to not only meet the different agencies but also to network within themselves. These efforts are a part of a continuous effort to empower the women of Penang through skills, knowledge and capacity building.
The Fiesta was attended by approximately 200 women from all over Seberang Perai Tengah where they had a chance to network with agencies such as SME Corp, Penang Development Corp. (PDC), the National Entrepreneur’s Development Corp. (Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad, PUNB) , Bank Rakyat, MPSP (Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai) and the women’s entrepreneur group, WomenBizSense. These efforts are a part of a continuous effort to empower the women of Penang through skills, knowledge and capacity building."
