Penang Fingerstyle Guitar Competition 2014

YB Teh Yee Cheu sponsored a guitar competition which attracted participants from all around Malaysia. 12 contestants were shortlisted for the grand finals which was held on 15 June 2014 at the Dewan Balai Rakyat Tanjong Bunga.

"I am surprised to see such good response from the people. We have contestants from Perak, Selangor and even Sabah,

"We should have such contests more often," he added.

Wow! What an amazing day.

The heat was on, both figuratively and literally! The competition was fierce, but eventually Lai Ze Ren emerged as the winner for Category 1 and Nicholas Tham was the winner for Category 2. However, in our books, all the contestants are already winners in their own right. Here are the results...

Category 1
Champion - Lai Ze Ren
1st runner up - Rayner Goh
2nd runner up - Sheila Julis
Consolation prize winners - Max Chin, Chong Hoc Weng and Raja A/L Kamachi

Category 2
Champion - Nicholas Tham
1st runner up - Lieu Ka Syn
2nd runner up - Agastya Bhatia
Consolation prize winners - Mr Ong Tee Li and Jarrod Dev-Ooi

The evening's concert started off with the winners and contestants in each category performing a few pieces which bagged them the awards. This was followed by local guitarists taking to the stage. This included Leon Thum, Victor Ng and our guest guitarist from Klang - Andy Ngew. Andy had earlier in the afternoon given a workshop on fingerstyle guitar. Among the topics that Andy touched on were the arrangement of incorporating multiple musical layers and parts such as the bass, percussion, rhythm and melody all into a fingerstyle piece.

A word of thanks to the judges of the Qualifying Round i.e. Suzie Lim, Victor Ng, William Kok, Roger Wang, Janden Wood and Clifford Cheam and to the Grand Final judges Andy Ngew, Carolyn Khor and Leon Thum.

Malam Mesra Keluarga Storytelling by Kimsir 6 June 2014

This month's special event at the event hall above the Tanjong Bunga market was Kimsir's storytelling session for kids. Kimsir told the story of the Wishing Tree. It was about a bear who ran away from home after having a sqabble with his little brother. He stumbled upon a wishing tree which grants him wishes. However, being away from his family made him sad, so he eventually returned home to his family.

Kimsir held his little audiences captivated with his ability to weave a simple tale into an exciting one with his expression, imagination and interaction with the children.

The storytelling session was presented in Mandarin.

Celebrating Dumpling Festival 2014

On 1 June 2014, YB Teh visited the Tanjong Bunga market to giveaway dumplings (Bak Chang) to celebrate the Dumpling Festival with the folks in Tanjong Bunga.

Program Pembelajaran Secara Kreatif di Batu Feringgi is a two-month programme held every Sunday at the PPS container in Jalan Sungai Emas. The programme is hosted by Priscilla Ho from Creativity at Heart.

Program bersama anak-anak muda di Batu Feringgi adalah suatu program pembelajaran yang lebih focus dalam kemahiran dan kepimpinan. Antara objektif utama program ini adalah;
1. Melengkapkan anak muda dalam kemahiran emosi-psikologi-sosial.
2. Mengenal pasti identiti mereka, membina keyakinan diri dan mempunyai daya tahan mengharungi cabaran/situasi yang sukar yang harus dihadapi dalam hidup.
3. Mengekspresikan emosi bukan secara lisan tetapi melalui seni kreatif, muzik dan drama.
