Penang Chefs 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary Dinner - 25th October 2012

(Excerpt of a speech by Mary Ann Harris, Chairman of  Malaysian Association of Hotels (Penang Chapter)
The Malaysian Association of Hotels, especially the Penang Chapter, is proud that so many of our chefs have been recognized through job offers overseas, as well as by the fact that Penang food is recognized across the globe.
Without you, dear chefs, we hotels could not begin to serve our guests with fabulous food that make them keep coming back for more.
So, to all the youngsters who are training to become chefs, we encourage you to grow in this noble profession, so that we will have more chefs to fill the vacancies with the many new F&B outlets & hotels constantly opening.
Lastly, for all the fame and good publicity that chefs have brought to Penang, we, the hoteliers, thank and salute you.
Well done and keep it up for another 25 years so we may celebrate your golden jubilee!

Thank you.

Best regards,
Mary Ann Harris DBA, CHA

Penang Governor Celebrates Birthday Joy With A Nostalgic Masterpiece From Malaysian Association Of Hotels (MAH)

General Managers of various hotels under the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang Chapter paid a birthday courtesy call and presented a birthday cake to TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang Tun Dato’ Seri Utama (Dr.) Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas at his residency, Seri Mutiara, in conjunction with His Excellency’s official birthday celebration on July 9, 2012.

The 30 kg cake, which was prepared by Mohamed Nazeri Ismail, Executive Pastry Chef and the pastry team of Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, was themed "Nostalgic Penang" showcasing a street scene of George Town at the turn of the twentieth century complete with pre-war shophouses, rickhaws and electric tram cars.

The cake is a rich fruit cake with a decorative sugarwork showpiece of sugar pastillage ice. Chef Nazeri, who is a stickler to detail and who has a passion for creating awe inspiring masterpieces, researched Penang’s bygone era on his day off in order to come up with this unique work of art. Chef Nazeri worked on the concept and the cake for one week.

“I was searching for ideas and I visited the local Penang State Museum in George Town. There, I was inspired by the old sepia tinted pictures of George Town from the days gone by. This regal birthday cake depicts the George Town’s Beach Street at the turn of the twentieth century,” said Chef Nazeri.

The Toh Puan was presented with a bouquet of her favourite flowers consisting of orchids and pink roses.

Present at the event were the Chairman of Malaysian Association of Hotels (Penang Chapter) Mary Ann Harris of Eastin Hotel. New York Times feature 36 Hours: Penang, Malaysia

PENANG is on a roll. Thanks to an influx of private and public investment and creative energy — precipitated in part by Unesco’s 2008 listing of Penang’s capital city, George Town, as a World Heritage site — the Malaysian island is padding out its list of attractions. To the region’s best street food add smart restaurants and bars. And a lively street culture anchored in religious festivals has now been joined by shows at the recently opened Performing Arts Center, and events like the Penang World Music Festival (March 30 to April 1; penangworldmusic.com), as well as the annual George Town Festival (June 15 to July 15; georgetownfestival.com), a month of exhibitions, performances and readings by local and international artists and writers.

Date: 2nd April 2011
Organizer: Malaysia Association of Hotels

Prizes worth about RM20,000 are up for grabs in the sixth annual MAH Charity Treasure Hunt slated for 2 April 2011. Organised by the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), the hunt, which is limited to 100 cars has an open category for the public and members of MAH.
