Trần Anh Hùng (born December 23, 1962) is a French film director of Vietnamese ancestry. He was born in Đà Nẵng, Central Vietnam, and emigrated to France when he was 12 following the fall of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.

 

Trần has long been considered as having been in the forefront of the wave of acclaimed overseas Vietnamese cinema in the past two decades. His films have received international notoriety and acclaim, and until recently had all been varied meditations on life in Vietnam.

 

His Oscar-nominated debut (for Best foreign film) was with The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) which also won two top prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, and his follow-up Cyclo (1995) featured top Hong Kong movie star Tony Leung Chiu Wai, also eventually winning a top prize at the Venice International Film Festival. The Vertical Ray of the Sun, released in 2000, was the third film in what many consider now to be his "Vietnam trilogy."

Bộ phim nói về Mùi, một cô bé đi ở cho một gia đình buôn vải ở Sài Gòn khoảng những năm 1950. Trong gia đình này, người vợ là trụ cột chính, gánh vác công việc, còn ông chồng chỉ biết chơi bời. Ông bà chủ có 3 con trai, một người trưởng thành, tên là Trung. Hai con trai còn lại, một đang tuổi vị thành niên ít quan tâm tới Mùi. Đứa thứ hai khoảng tuổi Mùi thường xuyên trêu chọc cô. Khoảng 10 năm sau, Mùi đã lớn trở thành một thiếu nữ. Mùi rời nhà bà chủ đến giúp việc cho Khuyến-bạn của cậu Trung. Khuyến là một nghệ sĩ dương cầm và cũng là người mà Mùi có những cảm xúc đầu tiên lúc còn nhỏ. Ở nhà Khuyến, Mùi đã tìm được tình yêu và trở thành vợ của Khuyến......

影片以小女孩梅的成長經曆爲主線，講述了她先後在兩個家庭環境中的生活境遇。小女孩梅10歲來到城裏一個大戶人家當傭人，主人是一個民間音樂家，常常不告而別便帶走家裏所有財物出門遊曆，家裏的大小事務都由少奶奶一人擔當。少奶奶曾經有一個女兒，在一場大病中夭折，梅長的很像死去的小姐，因此受到少奶奶的格外愛護。少爺一次又一次卷走家裏所有的積蓄，少奶奶終于支持不住家裏的開銷，開始變賣家産，靠織布賣紗維持生計。時光如流水，轉眼梅已經出落的亭亭玉立，而家裏也不再需要她。少奶奶忍痛將她送去了音樂家浩民少爺家中當傭人。浩民的未婚妻是一位熱烈奔放的現代女性，梅和那位富家小姐，可以說是代表了兩種文化和生活方式。兩個截然不同的女孩可以說形成了一種傳統與現代的交鋒。年輕的音樂家最終發現了梅，選擇了梅。在一個甯溢寂靜的夜裏，他推開了梅的門。女孩坐了起來。月光如流水一般，瀉在她純淨安詳的臉上……
 

A young girl, Mùi, becomes a servant for a rich family. Mùi is notably peaceful and curious about the world. The family consists of a frequently absent husband, a wife, an older son, two younger sons, and the husband's mother. When the husband leaves for his fourth and final time, he takes all the household's money. He returns ill and passes away shortly after......

Nhân vật chính của phim là Xích Lô (Lê Văn Lộc đóng). Xích Lô vốn là một thanh niên chất phác, mồ côi cha mẹ, anh làm nghề lái xích lô kiếm sống tại Sài Gòn. Xích Lô ở trong một căn hộ rách nát với gia đình gồm chị (Trần Nữ Yên Khê), một người em gái đang đi học và ông nội làm nghề vá xe đạp trên phố. Một hôm, trong lúc đi tiểu tiện vỉa hè, chiếc xích lô mà Xích Lô mượn của bà Buồn (Như Quỳnh) bị cướp. Trong lúc bế tắc vì nợ nần, anh chấp nhận đi theo băng đảng của bà Buồn và tay tình nhân của bà ta (Lương triều Vĩ) cướp của trả nợ. Sau khi được tiếp tay, Xích Lô liền xin gia nhập băng này. Theo băng đảng, Xích Lô phạm nhiều tội ác ghê gớm: cướp của, giết người, phá hoại công lương...

少年的父親因為騎三輪車發生意外而過世，為了挑起家計，少年接下父親的工作也成為三輪車伕，而其祖父在路邊幫人修車、妹妹幫來往過客擦皮鞋，姊姊則是淪為妓女。 少年所加入的三輪車行與其他車行有了嫌隙，對方為了報復便將少年的三輪車偷走，而車行老闆娘要求少年以幫忙不法勾當來抵債，但事到臨頭時少年卻膽怯反悔，因而被老闆娘軟禁，直到後來少年為了復仇將敵對車行放火燒盡，並將偷三輪車的年輕人打成重傷，這才決定加入老闆娘背後那個由「詩人」帶領的幫派。 而不賣身的姊姊不幸被變態的尋芳客強暴，讓一直愛著她的詩人老大非常悲憤，便將強暴姊姊的人折磨至死，但仍熬不過內心的歉疚和罪惡感，因此在自己家放火自殺...另一頭，少年準備照著幫派老大指示前往殺人，卻因喀藥誤事，但車行老闆娘並沒有追究，只是繼續讓少年騎著三輪車穿梭在城市裡載客，彷彿什麼事都沒有發生...
 

A young cyclo rickshaw driver (Lê Văn Lộc) pedals his cyclo through the crowded road of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in search for his next passenger. He inherited the cyclo from his late father, who died in a road accident while a truck hit him when he was driving the cyclo. His father did not want his son to take up his profession and desired him to live a better life than a cyclo driver. The cyclo driver's grandfather repairs tires despite his failing health, his younger sister shines shoes beside a restaurant along with other poor children and his older sister (Trần Nữ Yên Khê) delivers water to local grocery stores......

Bộ phim được bắt đầu vào ngày giỗ mẹ bốn chị em. Trước lúc lâm chung, trong cơn mê sảng, người mẹ đã để lộ ra rằng mình có một mối tình khác, mà theo ba chị em suy đoán, chỉ là mối tình trẻ thơ. Quá đau buồn, chỉ một tháng sau, người cha qua đời. Trong bốn chị em, Sương là người lớn tuổi nhất, đã có chồng và một con nhỏ. Khanh cũng đã có chồng là một nhà văn. Hải là diễn viên, chuyên đóng những vai phụ bị cắt cúp, chẳng được ai để ý. Liên là một cô gái trẻ trung, hay đùa. Cô rất yêu quý anh Hải, còn thấy vui khi người ngoài thường nhầm hai anh em là vợ chồng.

On the anniversary of their mother's death, three sisters in contemporary Hanoi meet to prepare a memorial banquet. After the banquet, the calm exteriors of the sisters' lives begin to give way to more turbulent truths, which will affect their seemingly idyllic relationships. The eldest sister has a small boy nicknamed Little Mouse, and botanical photographer husband Quoc, who is prone to long absences from home. The middle sister has recently discovered that she is pregnant to her husband Kien, who is a writer suffering from writer's block. The flirtatious youngest sister constantly fantasises about being pregnant, and lives with her brother Hai, for whom she has a deep affection.
